Treatment can be carried out before the results of cultures and other laboratory studies are known; however, once these results are available, the treatment for infection will need to be adjusted accordingly. a) Cryptococcosis, including cryptococcal meningitis and infections at other sites (eg, lung or skin). Normal hosts, AIDS patients, transplant patients, or patients with other causes of immunosuppression can be treated. In patients with AIDS, fluconazole can be used as maintenance therapy to prevent relapse of cryptococcal diseases. b) Systemic candidiasis, including candidemia, disseminated candidiasis, and other forms of invasive Candida infection. These include infections of the peritoneum, endocardium, eye, and urinary and pulmonary tracts. Cancer patients in intensive care units receiving cytotoxic or immunosuppressant therapy, or patients with other predisposing factors for Candida infections can be treated. c) Candidiasis of the mucous membranes. These include oropharyngeal, esophageal, non-invasive bronchopulmonary candidiasis, candiduria, mucocutaneous candidiasis, and chronic atrophic oral candidiasis (associated with the use of dental plates). Normal hosts and patients with compromised immune function can be treated.
