Pregnancy: Lorazepam should not be used during pregnancy. Several studies have suggested an increased risk of birth defects associated with the use of benzodiazepines during the first trimester of pregnancy. In humans, cord blood samples indicate placental transfer of benzodiazepines and their glucuronide metabolites. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported during the postnatal period in infants of mothers who took benzodiazepines for a few weeks or more prior to delivery. Symptoms such as hypoactivity, hypotonia, hypothermia, respiratory depression, apnea, feeding problems, and impaired metabolic response to cold stress have been reported in neonates born to mothers who had received benzodiazepines during late pregnancy or at delivery. Lactation: Lorazepam has been detected in breast milk, therefore it should not be administered to a nursing woman unless the expected benefit to the woman outweighs the potential risk to the child. Sedation and inability to suck have occurred in neonates of nursing women taking benzodiazepines. Infants of nursing women should be observed for pharmacological effects (including sedation and irritability).
