Product Description
AMOXIL® is a broad spectrum antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections such as: Upper and lower respiratory tract infections: For example, ear, nose and throat infections, otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngotonsillitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, lobar pneumonia, and bronchopneumonia. Gastrointestinal infections: For example, typhoid and paratyphoid fever. Genitourinary infections: For example, cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, bacteriuria in pregnancy, septic abortion, puerperal sepsis. Skin and soft tissue. Bile duct infections. Bone infections. Pelvic infections. Gonorrhea (not producing beta-lactamases). Septicemia. Endocarditis. Meningitis (when these last three are caused by susceptible organisms, they should be treated initially with high doses of parenteral therapy and where required in combination with other antibiotics). Peritonitis. Dental infections: In dental abscesses together with surgical management. Endocarditis prophylaxis: AMOXIL® is indicated for the prevention of bacteremia associated with procedures such as dental extractions, in patients at risk of developing endocarditis. The strains of the following organisms are generally sensitive to the bactericidal action of AMOXIL® in vitro: Gram-positive: Aerobes: Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus aureus sensitive to penicillin, Corynebacterium species, Bacillus anthracis, Listeria monocytogenes. Anaerobes: Clostridium species. Gram negative: Aerobes: Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella species, Shigella species, Bordetella pertussis, Brucella species, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Pasteurella septica, Vibrio cholerae. Amoxicillin is susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamases and, therefore, the spectrum of activity of AMOXIL® does not include organisms that produce these enzymes, including resistant staphylococci and all strains of Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and Enterobacter.
