Product Description

Clindamycin is indicated in infections due to sensitive anaerobic and gram-positive bacteria. Clindamycin is indicated as a primary agent in the treatment of pneumonia including serious lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonitis and lung abscess) caused by anaerobic organisms. Clindamycin is indicated as a second-term therapy in the treatment of pneumonia caused by susceptible strains of pneumococci, staphylococci, and streptococci. Clindamycin has good activity against a wide range of susceptible gram-positive anaerobic bacteria including: Eubacterium, Propionibacterium, Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, and many strains of Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium tetani. Among the gram negative anaerobes susceptible to clindamycin are Fusobacterium spp (although Fusobacterium varium is usually resistant), Veillonella and Bacteroides spp including the Bacteroides fragilis group.Fungi, yeasts, and viruses are resistant to clindamycin hydrochloride; however, Clindamycin has been reported to have some antiprotozoal activity against Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium sp. Accepted clindamycin treatments include bone and joint infections, female pelvic infections, intra-abdominal infections, bacterial septicemia caused by anaerobic organisms, skin and soft tissue infections. Clindamycin is used in the treatment of actinomycosis, babesiosis, erysipelas, malaria, in combination with quinine in the treatment of chloroquine-resistant malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum or in patients for whom standard therapy is contraindicated (e.g., children, pregnant women and allergic to sulfa), suppurative chronic otitis media, as a treatment for Pneumocystis carinii. In combination with primaquine, which is used in pneumonia caused by this pathogen in patients who do not respond or are intolerant to standard therapy. Clindamycin is also used in the treatment of Central Nervous System (CNS) sinusitis and toxoplasmosis, in combination with pyrimethamine in patients who are unresponsive to or intolerant of standard therapy (not all strain species of an organism may be susceptible to clindamycin).
