Product Description
The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD: DSM-IV) implies the presence of hyperactive – impulsive or inattentive symptoms that cause dysfunction and can present before 7 years of age. Symptoms cause clinically significant dysfunction in social, academic, or occupational settings, and can be present in two or more settings such as school (or work) and home. The symptoms should not be included in any other mental disorder. In the case of inattention, at least 6 of the following symptoms must have persistently presented in at least 6 months: Errors due to inattention to detail, sustained inattention, poor listening, not following the instructions of a homework, poor organization, avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort, losing things, being easily distracted, being forgetful. For the hyperactive – impulsive case: At least 6 of the following symptoms must have persistently presented in a period of 6 months: fidgeting / writhing, leaving the seat, running and climbing in inappropriate places, difficulty in calm activities, always doing something, excessive talking, hasty responses, not being able to wait turns, intrusion. The combined types must present criteria of inattention and hyperactivity – impulsivity for diagnosis. Special considerations for diagnosis: The specific etiology of this syndrome is unknown, and there is no simple diagnostic test. Proper diagnosis requires the use not only of medical resources but also of special psychological, educational and social resources. Learning may or may not be affected. The diagnosis should be based on a complete clinical history and evaluation of the child and not solely on the presence of the required number of DMS-IV features.
